To continue the topic of trap antennas, after manufacturing a 5-band dipole on the principle of W3DZZ radio fans applied me asking to design antennas for low frequency bands of 170 m and 80 m. I found the idea interesting, besides it was challenging to start 3 bands at once including 40 m. The traps were manufactured for a cutoff frequency of 3.65 MHz and a definite ratio LC so as the inductive reactance would prolong the external conductors to the resonance of ½ wave at 1.88 MHz. In that case the circuit capacitance shortened the whole dipole to the resonance of 1.5 wave at 40 meters. The internal dipole limited with the traps had resonance at 80 meters.

Antenna DIPOLE160/80

When the antenna center was raised to the height of 23 meters and the ends were located at the distance of 10 m above the ground, the impedance diagram was as follows:

The diagram shows that in the range of 160 meters the antenna resistance changes very quickly which considerably narrows the band. At 80 meters the resistance is acceptable but the band is still narrow. The range of 40 meters was the worst. Its resonance was the range of 250 ohm, which didn’t comply with 50 ohm feeder. Therefore the idea of a three-band antenna had to be abandoned due to a high standing wave ratio = 5.

That said, the standing wave ratio at 160 m and 80 m seemed quite acceptable for operation with a modern transceiver even without a tuner.

Experimental operation showed good results. At 160 meters the entire European territory answered with a report of 59 and 59+ at 100 W of transceiver FT-840. At 80 m I was heard both in Europe and Asia. But I must repeat that the service bands are quite limited. At 160 meters in my case and at my suspension height they were only 1860-1930 kHz and 3580-3720 kHz. This is a rate for two bands.
